In 1986, Kolej Pendeta Za'ba was known as the Ninth Residential College, or Kolej Bongsu. With the concept of naming its five residential blocks—Arif, Cendekiawan, Pintar, Bijaksana, and Bestari—Tn. Haji Ali took the initiative to rename Kolej Kesembilan as Kolej Pendeta Za'ba.
Turning to the history of Kolej Tun Perak, it was previously known as the Eighth Residential College. All the blocks at KTP were named after renowned warriors in Malay history. Among the warriors whose names were used are Jebat, Lekiu, Lekir, Tuah, and Kasturi. KTP was the first college to break the tradition of naming residential colleges at UPM by placing human values in their rightful place.
In 2019, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) introduced a consolidation plan involving its departments, known as the Governance Transformation Plan. The purpose of this plan was to maximize workforce utilization in order to improve the efficiency of service delivery. In response to UPM’s initiative, Kolej Pendeta Za’ba was merged with Kolej Tun Perak starting in June 2019, and a restructuring of the principalship and college administration was carried out.
