Hooves & Hearts: UPM Students Get Closer to the Equine World Through Volunteer Activities

SERDANG, February 16, 2026 – The Off-Campus Students Council (MPLK), in collaboration with the Housing and Placement Division (BPP) of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), organized a unique volunteering program focused on animal welfare titled "Hooves & Hearts: Stable Volunteer Program 2026."

The program, which took place at the UPM Equine Centre, involved 10 participants consisting of MPLK members. Under the leadership of the Program Director, Ms. Edriana Ermilla binti Muhammad Harri, this initiative aimed to provide a meaningful, hands-on learning experience outside the traditional classroom setting.

Practical Experience in Equine Care

The activity began with a safety briefing by the stable management team to expose participants to horse handling procedures and stable regulations. Participants then actively engaged in various physical tasks, including:

  • Cleaning the stable area and its surroundings to ensure hygiene.

  • Systematically organizing equine equipment.

  • Preparing and distributing food to the horses.

  • Grooming the horses and learning how to fit the bridle.

Fostering Empathy and Character Building

Beyond technical skills, this program successfully fostered noble values such as responsibility, empathy, and discipline among the participants through direct interaction with the animals. Teamwork and effective communication were also key elements, ensuring that all tasks were carried out efficiently by the volunteers.
