Tun Dr. Ismail College (KTDI) is among the earliest residential colleges built on the UPM Serdang campus. Formerly known by the nickname “Third,” meaning “third,” KTDI was the third college developed after the First and Second Colleges.
Construction began in February 1973 and was fully completed in July 1975. As one of the projects under the Second Malaysia Plan, the government spent a total of RM2.3 million on the construction of this college.
The new name of the college was taken in honor of a distinguished national figure, Tun Dr. Ismail, Malaysia’s second Deputy Prime Minister, as a tribute to his contributions and stature as one of the nation’s respected leaders. The name Tun Dr. Ismail College was officially adopted on 1 January 1995.
In 2019, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) introduced a consolidation plan involving its residential colleges, known as the Governance Transformation Plan. The purpose of this plan was to maximize workforce utilization in order to improve the efficiency of service delivery. In line with this initiative, Tun Dr. Ismail College was merged with College Five effective 15 June 2019, and a restructuring of the principalship and college administration was carried out.
Following this, the name Tun Dr. Ismail College has been retained and continues to be used as the college’s official name to this day, including the use of its logo and motto.
