Chancellor College is one of the student residential colleges at Universiti Putra Malaysia, Serdang campus, Selangor Darul Ehsan. Established in 1973, it was formerly known as the Residential College and later as Kolej Jelapang (from 1975), as the student hostel blocks were named after rice varieties, namely Murni, Masria, Malinja, and Mahsuri. In addition, the emblem of the Fourth Residential College itself was based on a rice stalk, which is one of the important symbols in the nation’s agricultural heritage.
As the years passed and after reaching 20 years of establishment, efforts were made to change the name of the Fourth Residential College to a new one. This initiative was led by the then College Principal, Dr. Ghizan Salleh, to reflect a college that was moving toward a more corporate image and in conjunction with the title used for the Honorary Head of the University Administration. The effort eventually came to fruition. During the Two-Decade Anniversary Celebration of the College, on 20 September 1995, the name Fourth Residential College was officially changed to Chancellor College and was inaugurated by the Chancellor of Universiti Putra Malaysia (formerly known as Universiti Pertanian Malaysia), His Excellency Tun Dato’ Seri Dr. Haji Hamdan Sheikh Tahir.
Today, Chancellor College continues to move forward. The Chancellor College community has now grown to nearly 600 residents and is supported by a dedicated Supreme Student Council, with full support from the Chancellor College Administration led by the Principal, to ensure that members of Chancellor College become outstanding graduates of Universiti Putra Malaysia, in line with the college motto, “KEKAL CEMERLANG” (Remain Excellent).
Universiti Putra Malaysia restructured the organization of its residential colleges and merged Chancellor College and College Six under a single administration, retaining the name Chancellor College effective 15 June 2019. This merger was the result of the Entity Governance Transformation Plan under the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni). Following the merger, the number of residential colleges was reduced from 17 to only 9.
